Putting $400M of Bitcoin on your company balance sheet

Also posted on my blog as usual. Read it there if you can, there are footnotes and inlined plots.
A couple of months ago, MicroStrategy (MSTR) had a spare $400M of cash which it decided to shift to Bitcoin (BTC).
Today we'll discuss in excrutiating detail why this is not a good idea.
When a company has a pile of spare money it doesn't know what to do with, it'll normally do buybacks or start paying dividends. That gives the money back to the shareholders, and from an economic perspective the money can get better invested in other more promising companies. If you have a huge pile of of cash, you probably should be doing other things than leave it in a bank account to gather dust.
However, this statement from MicroStrategy CEO Michael Saylor exists to make it clear he's buying into BTC for all the wrong reasons:
“This is not a speculation, nor is it a hedge. This was a deliberate corporate strategy to adopt a bitcoin standard.”
Let's unpack it and jump into the economics Bitcoin:

Is Bitcoin money?

No.
Or rather BTC doesn't act as money and there's no serious future path for BTC to become a form of money. Let's go back to basics. There are 3 main economic problems money solves:
1. Medium of Exchange. Before money we had to barter, which led to the double coincidence of wants problem. When everyone accepts the same money you can buy something from someone even if they don't like the stuff you own.
As a medium of exchange, BTC is not good. There are significant transaction fees and transaction waiting times built-in to BTC and these worsen the more popular BTC get.
You can test BTC's usefulness as a medium of exchange for yourself right now: try to order a pizza or to buy a random item with BTC. How many additional hurdles do you have to go through? How many fewer options do you have than if you used a regular currency? How much overhead (time, fees) is there?
2. Unit of Account. A unit of account is what you compare the value of objects against. We denominate BTC in terms of how many USD they're worth, so BTC is a unit of account presently. We can say it's because of lack of adoption, but really it's also because the market value of BTC is so volatile.
If I buy a $1000 table today or in 2017, it's roughly a $1000 table. We can't say that a 0.4BTC table was a 0.4BTC table in 2017. We'll expand on this in the next point:
3. Store of Value. When you create economic value, you don't want to be forced to use up the value you created right away.
For instance, if I fix your washing machine and you pay me in avocados, I'd be annoyed. I'd have to consume my payment before it becomes brown, squishy and disgusting. Avocado fruit is not good money because avocadoes loses value very fast.
On the other hand, well-run currencies like the USD, GBP, CAD, EUR, etc. all lose their value at a low and most importantly fairly predictible rate. Let's look at the chart of the USD against BTC
While the dollar loses value at a predictible rate, BTC is all over the place, which is bad.
One important use money is to write loan contracts. Loans are great. They let people spend now against their future potential earnings, so they can buy houses or start businesses without first saving up for a decade. Loans are good for the economy.
If you want to sign something that says "I owe you this much for that much time" then you need to be able to roughly predict the value of the debt in at the point in time where it's due.
Otherwise you'll have a hard time pricing the risk of the loan effectively. This means that you need to charge higher interests. The risk of making a loan in BTC needs to be priced into the interest of a BTC-denominated loan, which means much higher interest rates. High interests on loans are bad, because buying houses and starting businesses are good things.

BTC has a fixed supply, so these problems are built in

Some people think that going back to a standard where our money was denominated by a stock of gold (the Gold Standard) would solve economic problems. This is nonsense.
Having control over supply of your currency is a good thing, as long as it's well run.
See here
Remember that what is desirable is low variance in the value, not the value itself. When there are wild fluctuations in value, it's hard for money to do its job well.
Since the 1970s, the USD has been a fiat money with no intrinsic value. This means we control the supply of money.
Let's look at a classic poorly drawn econ101 graph
The market price for USD is where supply meets demand. The problem with a currency based on an item whose supply is fixed is that the price will necessarily fluctuate in response to changes in demand.
Imagine, if you will, that a pandemic strikes and that the demand for currency takes a sharp drop. The US imports less, people don't buy anything anymore, etc. If you can't print money, you get deflation, which is worsens everything. On the other hand, if you can make the money printers go brrrr you can stabilize the price
Having your currency be based on a fixed supply isn't just bad because in/deflation is hard to control.
It's also a national security risk...
The story of the guy who crashed gold prices in North Africa
In the 1200s, Mansa Munsa, the emperor of the Mali, was rich and a devout Muslim and wanted everyone to know it. So he embarked on a pilgrimage to make it rain all the way to Mecca.
He in fact made it rain so hard he increased the overall supply of gold and unintentionally crashed gold prices in Cairo by 20%, wreaking an economic havoc in North Africa that lasted a decade.
This story is fun, the larger point that having your inflation be at the mercy of foreign nations is an undesirable attribute in any currency. The US likes to call some countries currency manipulators, but this problem would be serious under a gold standard.

Currencies are based on trust

Since the USD is based on nothing except the US government's word, how can we trust USD not to be mismanaged?
The answer is that you can probably trust the fed until political stooges get put in place. Currently, the US's central bank managing the USD, the Federal Reserve (the Fed for friends & family), has administrative authority. The fed can say "no" to dumb requests from the president.
People who have no idea what the fed does like to chant "audit the fed", but the fed is already one of the best audited US federal entities. The transcripts of all their meetings are out in the open. As is their balance sheet, what they plan to do and why. If the US should audit anything it's the Department of Defense which operates without any accounting at all.
It's easy to see when a central bank will go rogue: it's when political yes-men are elected to the board.
For example, before printing themselves into hyperinflation, the Venezuelan president appointed a sociologist who publicly stated “Inflation does not exist in real life” and instead is a made up capitalist lie. Note what happened mere months after his gaining control over the Venezuelan currency
This is a key policy. One paper I really like, Sargent (1984) "The end of 4 big inflations" states:
The essential measures that ended hyperinflation in each of Germany,Austria, Hungary, and Poland were, first, the creation of an independentcentral bank that was legally committed to refuse the government'sdemand or additional unsecured credit and, second, a simultaneousalteration in the fiscal policy regime.
In english: *hyperinflation stops when the central bank can say "no" to the government."
The US Fed, like other well good central banks, is run by a bunch of nerds. When it prints money, even as aggressively as it has it does so for good reasons. You can see why they started printing on March 15th as the COVID lockdowns started:
The Federal Reserve is prepared to use its full range of tools to support the flow of credit to households and businesses and thereby promote its maximum employment and price stability goals.
In english: We're going to keep printing and lowering rates until jobs are back and inflation is under control. If we print until the sun is blotted out, we'll print in the shade.

BTC is not gold

Gold is a good asset for doomsday-preppers. If society crashes, gold will still have value.
How do we know that?
Gold has held value throughout multiple historic catastrophes over thousands of years. It had value before and after the Bronze Age Collapse, the Fall of the Western Roman Empire and Gengis Khan being Gengis Khan.
Even if you erased humanity and started over, the new humans would still find gold to be economically valuable. When Europeans d̶i̶s̶c̶o̶v̶e̶r̶e̶d̶ c̶o̶n̶q̶u̶e̶r̶e̶d̶ g̶e̶n̶o̶c̶i̶d̶e̶d̶ went to America, they found gold to be an important item over there too. This is about equivalent to finding humans on Alpha-Centauri and learning that they think gold is a good store of value as well.
Some people are puzzled at this: we don't even use gold for much! But it has great properties:
First, gold is hard to fake and impossible to manufacture. This makes it good to ascertain payment.
Second, gold doesnt react to oxygen, so it doesn't rust or tarnish. So it keeps value over time unlike most other materials.
Last, gold is pretty. This might sound frivolous, and you may not like it, but jewelry has actual value to humans.
It's no coincidence if you look at a list of the wealthiest families, a large number of them trade in luxury goods.
To paraphrase Veblen humans have a profound desire to signal social status, for the same reason peacocks have unwieldy tails. Gold is a great way to achieve that.
On the other hand, BTC lacks all these attributes. Its value is largely based on common perception of value. There are a few fundamental drivers of demand:
Apart from these, it's hard to argue that BTC will retain value throughout some sort of economic catastrophe.

BTC is really risky

One last statement from Michael Saylor I take offense to is this:
“We feel pretty confident that Bitcoin is less risky than holding cash, less risky than holding gold,” MicroStrategy CEO said in an interview
"BTC is less risky than holding cash or gold long term" is nonsense. We saw before that BTC is more volatile on face value, and that as long as the Fed isn't run by spider monkeys stacked in a trench coat, the inflation is likely to be within reasonable bounds.
But on top of this, BTC has Abrupt downside risks that normal currencies don't. Let's imagine a few:

Blockchain solutions are fundamentally inefficient

Blockchain was a genius idea. I still marvel at the initial white paper which is a great mix of economics and computer science.
That said, blockchain solutions make large tradeoffs in design because they assume almost no trust between parties. This leads to intentionally wasteful designs on a massive scale.
The main problem is that all transactions have to be validated by expensive computational operations and double checked by multiple parties. This means waste:
Many design problems can be mitigated by various improvements over BTC, but it remains that a simple database always works better than a blockchain if you can trust the parties to the transaction.

Proposal: The Sia Foundation

Vision Statement

A common sentiment is brewing online; a shared desire for the internet that might have been. After decades of corporate encroachment, you don't need to be a power user to realize that something has gone very wrong.
In the early days of the internet, the future was bright. In that future, when you sent an instant message, it traveled directly to the recipient. When you needed to pay a friend, you announced a transfer of value to their public key. When an app was missing a feature you wanted, you opened up the source code and implemented it. When you took a picture on your phone, it was immediately encrypted and backed up to storage that you controlled. In that future, people would laugh at the idea of having to authenticate themselves to some corporation before doing these things.
What did we get instead? Rather than a network of human-sized communities, we have a handful of enormous commons, each controlled by a faceless corporate entity. Hey user, want to send a message? You can, but we'll store a copy of it indefinitely, unencrypted, for our preference-learning algorithms to pore over; how else could we slap targeted ads on every piece of content you see? Want to pay a friend? You can—in our Monopoly money. Want a new feature? Submit a request to our Support Center and we'll totally maybe think about it. Want to backup a photo? You can—inside our walled garden, which only we (and the NSA, of course) can access. Just be careful what you share, because merely locking you out of your account and deleting all your data is far from the worst thing we could do.
You rationalize this: "MEGACORP would never do such a thing; it would be bad for business." But we all know, at some level, that this state of affairs, this inversion of power, is not merely "unfortunate" or "suboptimal" – No. It is degrading. Even if MEGACORP were purely benevolent, it is degrading that we must ask its permission to talk to our friends; that we must rely on it to safeguard our treasured memories; that our digital lives are completely beholden to those who seek only to extract value from us.
At the root of this issue is the centralization of data. MEGACORP can surveil you—because your emails and video chats flow through their servers. And MEGACORP can control you—because they hold your data hostage. But centralization is a solution to a technical problem: How can we make the user's data accessible from anywhere in the world, on any device? For a long time, no alternative solution to this problem was forthcoming.
Today, thanks to a confluence of established techniques and recent innovations, we have solved the accessibility problem without resorting to centralization. Hashing, encryption, and erasure encoding got us most of the way, but one barrier remained: incentives. How do you incentivize an anonymous stranger to store your data? Earlier protocols like BitTorrent worked around this limitation by relying on altruism, tit-for-tat requirements, or "points" – in other words, nothing you could pay your electric bill with. Finally, in 2009, a solution appeared: Bitcoin. Not long after, Sia was born.
Cryptography has unleashed the latent power of the internet by enabling interactions between mutually-distrustful parties. Sia harnesses this power to turn the cloud storage market into a proper marketplace, where buyers and sellers can transact directly, with no intermediaries, anywhere in the world. No more silos or walled gardens: your data is encrypted, so it can't be spied on, and it's stored on many servers, so no single entity can hold it hostage. Thanks to projects like Sia, the internet is being re-decentralized.
Sia began its life as a startup, which means it has always been subjected to two competing forces: the ideals of its founders, and the profit motive inherent to all businesses. Its founders have taken great pains to never compromise on the former, but this often threatened the company's financial viability. With the establishment of the Sia Foundation, this tension is resolved. The Foundation, freed of the obligation to generate profit, is a pure embodiment of the ideals from which Sia originally sprung.
The goals and responsibilities of the Foundation are numerous: to maintain core Sia protocols and consensus code; to support developers building on top of Sia and its protocols; to promote Sia and facilitate partnerships in other spheres and communities; to ensure that users can easily acquire and safely store siacoins; to develop network scalability solutions; to implement hardforks and lead the community through them; and much more. In a broader sense, its mission is to commoditize data storage, making it cheap, ubiquitous, and accessible to all, without compromising privacy or performance.
Sia is a perfect example of how we can achieve better living through cryptography. We now begin a new chapter in Sia's history. May our stewardship lead it into a bright future.

Overview

Today, we are proposing the creation of the Sia Foundation: a new non-profit entity that builds and supports distributed cloud storage infrastructure, with a specific focus on the Sia storage platform. What follows is an informal overview of the Sia Foundation, covering two major topics: how the Foundation will be funded, and what its funds will be used for.

Organizational Structure

The Sia Foundation will be structured as a non-profit entity incorporated in the United States, likely a 501(c)(3) organization or similar. The actions of the Foundation will be constrained by its charter, which formalizes the specific obligations and overall mission outlined in this document. The charter will be updated on an annual basis to reflect the current goals of the Sia community.
The organization will be operated by a board of directors, initially comprising Luke Champine as President and Eddie Wang as Chairman. Luke Champine will be leaving his position at Nebulous to work at the Foundation full-time, and will seek to divest his shares of Nebulous stock along with other potential conflicts of interest. Neither Luke nor Eddie personally own any siafunds or significant quantities of siacoin.

Funding

The primary source of funding for the Foundation will come from a new block subsidy. Following a hardfork, 30 KS per block will be allocated to the "Foundation Fund," continuing in perpetuity. The existing 30 KS per block miner reward is not affected. Additionally, one year's worth of block subsidies (approximately 1.57 GS) will be allocated to the Fund immediately upon activation of the hardfork.
As detailed below, the Foundation will provably burn any coins that it cannot meaningfully spend. As such, the 30 KS subsidy should be viewed as a maximum. This allows the Foundation to grow alongside Sia without requiring additional hardforks.
The Foundation will not be funded to any degree by the possession or sale of siafunds. Siafunds were originally introduced as a means of incentivizing growth, and we still believe in their effectiveness: a siafund holder wants to increase the amount of storage on Sia as much as possible. While the Foundation obviously wants Sia to succeed, its driving force should be its charter. Deriving significant revenue from siafunds would jeopardize the Foundation's impartiality and focus. Ultimately, we want the Foundation to act in the best interests of Sia, not in growing its own budget.

Responsibilities

The Foundation inherits a great number of responsibilities from Nebulous. Each quarter, the Foundation will publish the progress it has made over the past quarter, and list the responsibilities it intends to prioritize over the coming quarter. This will be accompanied by a financial report, detailing each area of expenditure over the past quarter, and forecasting expenditures for the coming quarter. Below, we summarize some of the myriad responsibilities towards which the Foundation is expected to allocate its resources.

Maintain and enhance core Sia software

Arguably, this is the most important responsibility of the Foundation. At the heart of Sia is its consensus algorithm: regardless of other differences, all Sia software must agree upon the content and rules of the blockchain. It is therefore crucial that the algorithm be stewarded by an entity that is accountable to the community, transparent in its decision-making, and has no profit motive or other conflicts of interest.
Accordingly, Sia’s consensus functionality will no longer be directly maintained by Nebulous. Instead, the Foundation will release and maintain an implementation of a "minimal Sia full node," comprising the Sia consensus algorithm and P2P networking code. The source code will be available in a public repository, and signed binaries will be published for each release.
Other parties may use this code to provide alternative full node software. For example, Nebulous may extend the minimal full node with wallet, renter, and host functionality. The source code of any such implementation may be submitted to the Foundation for review. If the code passes review, the Foundation will provide "endorsement signatures" for the commit hash used and for binaries compiled internally by the Foundation. Specifically, these signatures assert that the Foundation believes the software contains no consensus-breaking changes or other modifications to imported Foundation code. Endorsement signatures and Foundation-compiled binaries may be displayed and distributed by the receiving party, along with an appropriate disclaimer.
A minimal full node is not terribly useful on its own; the wallet, renter, host, and other extensions are what make Sia a proper developer platform. Currently, the only implementations of these extensions are maintained by Nebulous. The Foundation will contract Nebulous to ensure that these extensions continue to receive updates and enhancements. Later on, the Foundation intends to develop its own implementations of these extensions and others. As with the minimal node software, these extensions will be open source and available in public repositories for use by any Sia node software.
With the consensus code now managed by the Foundation, the task of implementing and orchestrating hardforks becomes its responsibility as well. When the Foundation determines that a hardfork is necessary (whether through internal discussion or via community petition), a formal proposal will be drafted and submitted for public review, during which arguments for and against the proposal may be submitted to a public repository. During this time, the hardfork code will be implemented, either by Foundation employees or by external contributors working closely with the Foundation. Once the implementation is finished, final arguments will be heard. The Foundation board will then vote whether to accept or reject the proposal, and announce their decision along with appropriate justification. Assuming the proposal was accepted, the Foundation will announce the block height at which the hardfork will activate, and will subsequently release source code and signed binaries that incorporate the hardfork code.
Regardless of the Foundation's decision, it is the community that ultimately determines whether a fork is accepted or rejected – nothing can change that. Foundation node software will never automatically update, so all forks must be explicitly adopted by users. Furthermore, the Foundation will provide replay and wipeout protection for its hard forks, protecting other chains from unintended or malicious reorgs. Similarly, the Foundation will ensure that any file contracts formed prior to a fork activation will continue to be honored on both chains until they expire.
Finally, the Foundation also intends to pursue scalability solutions for the Sia blockchain. In particular, work has already begun on an implementation of Utreexo, which will greatly reduce the space requirements of fully-validating nodes (allowing a full node to be run on a smartphone) while increasing throughput and decreasing initial sync time. A hardfork implementing Utreexo will be submitted to the community as per the process detailed above.
As this is the most important responsibility of the Foundation, it will receive a significant portion of the Foundation’s budget, primarily in the form of developer salaries and contracting agreements.

Support community services

We intend to allocate 25% of the Foundation Fund towards the community. This allocation will be held and disbursed in the form of siacoins, and will pay for grants, bounties, hackathons, and other community-driven endeavours.
Any community-run service, such as a Skynet portal, explorer or web wallet, may apply to have its costs covered by the Foundation. Upon approval, the Foundation will reimburse expenses incurred by the service, subject to the exact terms agreed to. The intent of these grants is not to provide a source of income, but rather to make such services "break even" for their operators, so that members of the community can enrich the Sia ecosystem without worrying about the impact on their own finances.

Ensure easy acquisition and storage of siacoins

Most users will acquire their siacoins via an exchange. The Foundation will provide support to Sia-compatible exchanges, and pursue relevant integrations at its discretion, such as Coinbase's new Rosetta standard. The Foundation may also release DEX software that enables trading cryptocurrencies without the need for a third party. (The Foundation itself will never operate as a money transmitter.)
Increasingly, users are storing their cryptocurrency on hardware wallets. The Foundation will maintain the existing Ledger Nano S integration, and pursue further integrations at its discretion.
Of course, all hardware wallets must be paired with software running on a computer or smartphone, so the Foundation will also develop and/or maintain client-side wallet software, including both full-node wallets and "lite" wallets. Community-operated wallet services, i.e. web wallets, may be funded via grants.
Like core software maintenance, this responsibility will be funded in the form of developer salaries and contracting agreements.

Protect the ecosystem

When it comes to cryptocurrency security, patching software vulnerabilities is table stakes; there are significant legal and social threats that we must be mindful of as well. As such, the Foundation will earmark a portion of its fund to defend the community from legal action. The Foundation will also safeguard the network from 51% attacks and other threats to network security by implementing softforks and/or hardforks where necessary.
The Foundation also intends to assist in the development of a new FOSS software license, and to solicit legal memos on various Sia-related matters, such as hosting in the United States and the EU.
In a broader sense, the establishment of the Foundation makes the ecosystem more robust by transferring core development to a more neutral entity. Thanks to its funding structure, the Foundation will be immune to various forms of pressure that for-profit companies are susceptible to.

Drive adoption of Sia

Although the overriding goal of the Foundation is to make Sia the best platform it can be, all that work will be in vain if no one uses the platform. There are a number of ways the Foundation can promote Sia and get it into the hands of potential users and developers.
In-person conferences are understandably far less popular now, but the Foundation can sponsor and/or participate in virtual conferences. (In-person conferences may be held in the future, permitting circumstances.) Similarly, the Foundation will provide prizes for hackathons, which may be organized by community members, Nebulous, or the Foundation itself. Lastly, partnerships with other companies in the cryptocurrency space—or the cloud storage space—are a great way to increase awareness of Sia. To handle these responsibilities, one of the early priorities of the Foundation will be to hire a marketing director.

Fund Management

The Foundation Fund will be controlled by a multisig address. Each member of the Foundation's board will control one of the signing keys, with the signature threshold to be determined once the final composition of the board is known. (This threshold may also be increased or decreased if the number of board members changes.) Additionally, one timelocked signing key will be controlled by David Vorick. This key will act as a “dead man’s switch,” to be used in the event of an emergency that prevents Foundation board members from reaching the signature threshold. The timelock ensures that this key cannot be used unless the Foundation fails to sign a transaction for several months.
On the 1st of each month, the Foundation will use its keys to transfer all siacoins in the Fund to two new addresses. The first address will be controlled by a high-security hot wallet, and will receive approximately one month's worth of Foundation expenditures. The second address, receiving the remaining siacoins, will be a modified version of the source address: specifically, it will increase the timelock on David Vorick's signing key by one month. Any other changes to the set of signing keys, such as the arrival or departure of board members, will be incorporated into this address as well.
The Foundation Fund is allocated in SC, but many of the Foundation's expenditures must be paid in USD or other fiat currency. Accordingly, the Foundation will convert, at its discretion, a portion of its monthly withdrawals to fiat currency. We expect this conversion to be primarily facilitated by private "OTC" sales to accredited investors. The Foundation currently has no plans to speculate in cryptocurrency or other assets.
Finally, it is important that the Foundation adds value to the Sia platform well in excess of the inflation introduced by the block subsidy. For this reason, the Foundation intends to provably burn, on a quarterly basis, any coins that it cannot allocate towards any justifiable expense. In other words, coins will be burned whenever doing so provides greater value to the platform than any other use. Furthermore, the Foundation will cap its SC treasury at 5% of the total supply, and will cap its USD treasury at 4 years’ worth of predicted expenses.

Addendum: Hardfork Timeline
We would like to see this proposal finalized and accepted by the community no later than September 30th. A new version of siad, implementing the hardfork, will be released no later than October 15th. The hardfork will activate at block 293220, which is expected to occur around 12pm EST on January 1st, 2021.

Addendum: Inflation specifics
The total supply of siacoins as of January 1st, 2021 will be approximately 45.243 GS. The initial subsidy of 1.57 GS thus increases the supply by 3.47%, and the total annual inflation in 2021 will be at most 10.4% (if zero coins are burned). In 2022, total annual inflation will be at most 6.28%, and will steadily decrease in subsequent years.

Conclusion

We see the establishment of the Foundation as an important step in the maturation of the Sia project. It provides the ecosystem with a sustainable source of funding that can be exclusively directed towards achieving Sia's ambitious goals. Compared to other projects with far deeper pockets, Sia has always punched above its weight; once we're on equal footing, there's no telling what we'll be able to achieve.
Nevertheless, we do not propose this change lightly, and have taken pains to ensure that the Foundation will act in accordance with the ideals that this community shares. It will operate transparently, keep inflation to a minimum, and respect the user's fundamental role in decentralized systems. We hope that everyone in the community will consider this proposal carefully, and look forward to a productive discussion.

FSLY Plummets...

For Trading October 15th
BANKS BEAT BUT FALTER
Added some QQQ putskis today.
Today’s market was interesting…not good or bad, just interesting. It always concerns me when the earnings news is good and the market falls. UNH, BAC, and GS all reported, and the numbers were good, and all fell well off the highs, with UNH the only one to close up, and only pennies at that. After the hotter than expected PPI numbers came out, the open was slightly higher, but it didn’t last long. After the DJIA hit the high for the day +120, it turned down and by 11:00 it was down for the day. The DJIA finished -165.81 (.58%), NASDAQ -95.17 (.80%), S&P 500 -23.26 (.66%), the Russell -15.20 (.93%) and the DJ Transports the big winner at +105.67 (.90%). Internals were soft at 1.5:1 on NYSE and 1.9:1 on the NAZ. The DJIA was 10 up, 20 down, with UNH the biggest decliner paring 64 DP’s off the average. Tomorrow we have UAL, WBA, MS, and TSM reporting as well as the continuing and initial claims, Phili Fed, Empire State and Export / Import numbers for Sept. Lots of stuff to digest.
Tonight’s closing comment video: https://youtu.be/Z-R_NRe9TLM
See our Honest Abe trade records for the year in our video/ discord etc...
SECTORS: There was good news for the banks, again, but by midday it just didn’t matter. Today’s losers were BAC, GS, and the biggest loser, UNH which was trading +2.50 premarket and never even made it to unchanged, finishing -9.57, which cost the DJIA 64DP’s. There was some good news for holders of Concho Resources. The talk is that they are a takeover candidate and after hitting $51.00 it closed on the lows, but still +4.79 (10.8%) on the day. FSLY holders weren’t quite so lucky. The stock which traded $10.63 in March has been a juggernaut, hitting $136.50 yesterday, reported after the close that their prior expectations of revenue “should not be relied upon.” It seems that geopolitical concerns had hampered their operation. The customer is the parent company of TIK TOK! While the numbers given (they report on 10/28) aren’t terrible, when your stock has risen the way this one has, it’s a problem. The last on it in late trading was $91.28 -37.55 (30%) after a low of $86.40. Even at this lower price, the stock is still up from the start of the year by 400%. Another favorite, DraftKings (DKNG) has not acted well since doing their offering last week priced about $4.00 under the market @ $52.00 and has not been able to climb back over that level. The stock closed $48.04 -3.14 today (6.14%). The continuing Covid-19 issues for major sports teams and cancelled and postponed may be weighing on the stock in the short term. After the close VRTX reported the end of their trial on a protein-deficiency treatment. The stock fell from its close of $371.46 -4.63 to trade $235.01 and closed $239 -37.09 (13.43%).
New Group: AIR & CRUISE LINES were HIGHER with +.64, HA +.03, ALK +.53, and XTN $61.57 +.52 (.85%).
FOOD SUPPLY CHAIN was LOWER with TSN +.26, BGS -.24, FLO -.11, CPB -.15, CAG -.38, MDLZ -.38, CALM -.15, JJSF -.43, SAFM +.03, HRL -.41, SJM -1.12, PPC +.89, KR -1.10, and PBJ $34.56 -.28 (.78%).

Hulk.Finance: A Combination of DeFi and High Frequency Trading

DeFi continues to push the limits of blockchain technology. Whether its staking a native token for a second token from the same ecosystem, locking liquidity for an eternity to promote liquidity providing and the benefits of locking tokens, or simply creating new tokenomics that can be tested and studied, DeFi is exploring all avenues to produce the next breakout token such as YFI. Hulk.finance has stepped in to do just that.

Hulk.finance (Contract Address: 0xE1f8CD01aB04b51d02C6fb2BCA61B03fB5e33B99**)** is an ERC20 token which plans to utilize a DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization) format that will be community governed in order to promote high frequency trading in a manner only DeFi can bring to the table. As stated on their website, “Our project connects a high-yield partner HFT (High Frequency Trading) fund that has successfully worked from the beginning of 2020 and has year-to-date yields of more than 40%. The fund size is more than 70 millions USD and they operate on several cryptocurrency exchanges like Binance and Bithumb with their API robots. What is good — automated trading does not require continuous uptrend of the Bitcoin price. We have seen good results during Bitcoin breakouts and breakdowns. We want to have the same yields from our investments. But there is a problem — they work with an entrance barrier of 1,000,000 USDT, like many private banking services or high-yield ETFs. Our basic idea is to make a kind of DeFi staking pool and put it under the management of the HFT fund. We will develop all infrastructure for connecting finance flows, deposits, and withdrawals.

The HULK total supply is 100,000 Tokens. Distribution breakdown is as follows:

The project is new but already has a road-map to help guide their lofty ambitions. The first step begins with the formation of the pre-sale and Liquidity pool on Uniswap which is currently ongoing. Secondly, they will distribute Hulk tokens via staking farms. As described in their website they “will run staking farms for farming 80,000 HULKs*. You will need to stake appropriate tokens on the selected farms to get your share of rewards in HULKs. Farm 1 will farm rewards of 60,000* HULKs within 15 days, staking token — ETH-HULK LP Uniswap V2. Farm 2 will farm rewards of 10,000 HULKs within 15 days, staking token — USDN. Farm 3 will farm rewards of 10,000 HULKs within 15 days, staking token — Token Y. Token Y will be announced prior to the farms’ launch. Genesis farming time will be 15 days, after that farming rate will be settled on the level of 15th day. We implement halving every three days, so early farmers will get more HULKs. View on Etherscan. In order to support the price of the token from dumping, we will take a 5% commission for the sale of tokens, when holders sell it on Uniswap, burn 4% and add 1% to the community grants account. The burnt amount will be added to farming pools after 15 days of initial farming. So, for example, if someone sold 20,000 HULKs, we will take 1,000 tokens, burn 800 of them and they will be re-minted on day 16. 200 tokens will be sent to the community grants address. The total supply is 100,000 tokens.”

The third step includes the staking pool. The staking pool will be open for everyone on the following terms and conditions.

Funds from the staking pool will be transferred to the HFT fund for trading operations.

Lastly, the Vault concept is descriptive. “We want to share revenue from HFT fund among HULK holders that stake their tokens in HULK Vault. HFT fund will send revenue from its operation once a month, on the first day of the following month. Current concept: Monthly revenue from HFT operations will be shared between HULK tokens staked in the vault according to the time of staking divided on 720 hours. Example: You stake your 500 HULK tokens in Vault for 20 days (480 hours). Your HULK/hours equal to 500*480=240,000. Total HULK/hours in Vault in this month — 60,000,000. Your share in this month = 0,4%. HFT fund has earned 4% on staking pool funds this month. After payout of their 1,25% (15%/12) per month to USDT stakers, the remaining part is 10,000,000 USDT x 2,75% = 275,000 USD. Your profit share 0.4% of 275,000 = 1100 USDT will be sent as USDT to your address, connected with a Vault.”

All of the above described by the tokens creators seems very complicated, but many tokens are already trying to accomplish this without access to an already built fund which can execute trades on a daily basis. Also due in part is the projects commitment to becoming a DAO by allowing holders to vote on key project decisions and development to make the ecosystem more effective and manageable. Decentralization is the most trustworthy base of contract/cryptocurrency ownership. It creates a unique and secure environment free from direct outside influence due to the filter of the entire community being involved. The developers have said that the voting system for the project will be done within the first 30 days of project launch.

With lofty ambition and high expectations, the project looks to capitalize on the DeFi boom by hedging their fund against the market and giving holders a share of the pie. It will be interesting to see how successful and sustainable the project can be, but we will find out soon enough.

Cryptopearl.net - part of a well-organized crypto scam ring

Hello reddit! I've done a bit of digging into a scam ring. This all started from a random stranger messaging me today to help them get their crypto off of cryptopearl.net. They say they want to get their crypto off an exchange because they need to help their sick father who's in Egypt and has Covid, but because they moved countries recently, they can't pull it off for 9 days due to "fraud protection rules" and because all their friends are in China, they can't talk with any of their friends. Their account is geo-locked and then they ask you to mule it for them... the only catch is that you have to pay 0.03 BTC to "verify" your account on the exchange and withdraw said sum for your new pal. Said scammer says they'll totally pay you back and not to worry.
Just to make sure it's obvious, anything you send to this exchange or it's ilk will be sent straight to the pocket of scammers.
I've seen this site and sites like it many times over the last couple of years. I've done some digging through their site and found some very interesting stuff.
  1. The images on their chat are all steam cdn profile pictures. And the element's class reads as "image for chat message" instead of profile picture or something a sane developer would use. It's just conjecture... but I feel like a very in-experienced developer put this together.
  2. The description for the site: "Founded in London in 2013, the leading..." was lifted directly from cex.io (a real crypto exchange)
  3. Whois lookup states their site was registered January 2020. A bit odd for something that exists entirely as an online-business... I guess they didn't have a site for 7 years? lol.
  4. Digging beyond the first page references another site called "expohills" (now offline) which is linked in this steemit article as a scam: https://steemit.com/steem/@summisimeon/expohills-com-a-new-scam-website-073bf1e0121f6. Surprise! The site looks nearly identical!
  5. csrf token changes when refreshed in a new browser session, so there is some kind of page generation going on instead of just a straight javascript/html/css site.
A search for a very specific text from the site "Your payment will be completed after confirmation by the network" came up with a long list of very interesting exchanges that all seem to be identical:
https://onebittrading.com/terms https://bit-trading.online/bit-trading https://ctyptocoin.com/bitcoin-trading https://bitnexium.com/bitcoin-trading https://cointradery.com/bitcoin-trading https://betcrypt.net/bitcoin-trading https://cex.services/bitcoin-trading https://coinscash.org/bitcoin-trading https://ixibtc.com/bitcoin-trading https://bityoox.com/bitcoin-trading https://futex.org/bitcoin-trading https://ivibitpay.com/terms https://hufscoin.com/terms https://thecoinwallets.com/terms https://marker-dao.com/terms https://bitexios.com/bitcoin-trading https://joycrypto.net/bitcoin-trading https://wilbtc.com/terms https://bitlexi.com/terms https://tryton.exchange/terms https://bittlyx.com/terms https://ecryptopal.com/terms https://bitcoinamo.com/bitcoin-trading https://cryptojoin.net/terms https://coinchase.biz/terms https://vertbtc.com/terms https://bitslash.net/terms https://binomion.com/bitcoin-trading <--- registered August 15th 2019 https://bitfully.net/terms <--- registered on September 18th 2020
I checked about half of these... and each one was using cloudflare to hide the real server's location. I wonder how u/cloudflare feels about their services supporting scam rings?
Certainly also of interest, I found https://qna.habr.com/q/646554 where a chap going by dimavfox appears to be working on the source code for the above sites! The savvy reader can realize that the website is in Russian.
My Google search that gave the above sites said in total there were about 175 sites. (Many of which are now offline)
This appears to be a fairly large scam. They must be making decent money off of it because the sites are still up and new sites keep getting setup.
There appears to be some kind of central control, as all the sites get the same chat messages at the same time... but logging in and posting a chat message on one site does not propagate to the other sites.
Please be careful everyone! Do not implicitly trust any random site or sob story a stranger shares with you. Make sure you do the smell test. Does it seem like I might get something for doing very little? Do I have to put money or personal details on-the-line before I receive the alleged many-times-greater reward? Is the stranger saying they'll be "doing me a favor?" It's most likely not real.

I came up with a conspiracy theory for Taylor.

Sep 29th: Trump and Biden Debate
Oct 2nd: In the early morning Trump declares he has caught covid. At 6:15pm the same day he transfers to Walter Reed out of an abundance of caution.
Oct 5th: No information has been shared with the public. A report is released that an anonymous internal source within the hospital has said the presidents condition has been changed to 'Poor'.
Oct 6th: Mike Pence cancels participation in the Vp debate to focus on efforts to keep whitehouse running while Trump in hospital.
Oct 8th: Late in the evening the Whitehouse releases a report that the presidents condition has been moved to Critical.
Oct 9th: Mike Pence and the needed majority of principal officers invoke the 25th amendment and remove President Trump from Office. Mike Pence is now the POTUS.
Oct 12th: Mitch McConnell announces the updated Republican election plans. Trump will stay as the candidate. When he wins Pence, now once again VP, will immediately invoke the 25th a second time. No other message is spoken about for the next two weeks. In large the legal communities head explodes.
Oct 26th: President Pence picks Mitt Romney for his Vice President. Romney is quickly confirmed.
Oct 30th: The morning of the 30th Biden's presence is questioned. He hasn't been seen in two weeks. He makes a public announcement that evening that shortly after the debate had come down with covid symptoms and chosen to self quarantine. In his public announcement he looks very healthy alert and energetic. Overall the public is unhappy for the betrayal in trust by not being notified of the quarantine.
Nov 1st: Pence has a live televised prayer for the health of Donald J. Trump. He reminds Americans that Trump needs their votes.
Nov 2nd: A picture of what appears to be President Trump on a respirator is leaked to the media. Covid still ravages the US.
Nov 3rd: Election Day. Trump wins again. With the understanding a vote for Trump was a vote for Pence, the 'centrics' of America hard pivoted away from Biden. Democrats do take majority in both House and Senate.
Nov 26th: Thanksgiving Mike Pence pardons turkey, gives thanks, makes special thanks to Newly Elected Justice.
Dec 1st: With no reports on the health of Donald Trump, his businesses and assets in the State of New York are liquidated for bitcoin.
Dec 2nd: Numerous government agencies and private organizations open new lawsuits against Trump.
Dec 14th: Trump is reported to be transported to his hotel in Palm by medical units. An authentic but highly suspicious photo of Trump in an iron lung is circulated to the media.
Dec 15th: Pence flies down to see Trump.
Dec 21st: Markets crash and Trading curbed. European market flutter heavily.
Dec 22nd: Markets crash and Trading curbed. Global Markets become erratic. Bitcoin climbs.
Dec 23nd: Markets crash and Trading curbed. Global Markets crash. Bitcoin climbs.
Dec 24th: President Pence pardons Donald J Trump. States that all federal efforts must be employeed moving the world forward. Public demand impeachment.
Dec 26th: President Pence makes public announcement that he will work with anyone to get the US back on track. Signs several Democrat bills that have been fast tracked by McConnell.
Jan 11th: Second batch of Joint bills are put on Pence desk and signed. Economy has already turned back and Covid Vaccine Distribution begins in 6 weeks. The ceo's of all major retail pharmacies are invited to speak. They announce they will be the authorized distributors of the vaccine. The cost to the consumer will be $3. In odd fashion the ceo of Walgreens re-approaches the live TV mic and announces that Walgreens will cover the cost of the vaccines administered at their locations for the first two weeks. Public still cry for impeachment but Democratic are apathetic to pursue as Pence continues to play ball.
July 4th, 2031: The Trump organization announces the passing of Donald J. Trump at the age of 85. Cause of death Stroke. Family releases photos the former President taken only weeks before with his new korean wife, Ji-eun. He appeared in good health and happiness in the multiple images.

For Trading October 15th
BANKS BEAT BUT FALTER
Our “open forum” on Discord, which allows you to interact with subscribers and others to allow direct questions and chart opinions on just about any stock, continues to grow with more participants every day. It is informative and allows me to share insights as the market is open and moving. The link is: https://discord.gg/ATvC7YZ and I will be there and active from before the open and all day. It’s a great place to share ideas and gain some insights, and we’ve grown to almost 3000 members. I also returned to my radio show today with a great live interview with the Chief Medical Officer of JANONE (JAN) and it was a great show. This is the link to the audio recording including my discussion of the market and the very exciting story of JAN’s phenomenal NON-OPIOID Pain Med! This is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCFCxnijFO4 Enjoy!!
Yesterday’s interview with Joe Moscato, CEO of GNBT is available today at https://youtu.be/rJBtqC75g3A It’s a great story and this stock (I believe) won’t stay at these levels once there is a wider understanding of what this company actually has going for it!!
Tonight’s closing comment video: https://youtu.be/Z-R_NRe9TLM

Hulk.Finance: A Combination of DeFi and High Frequency Trading

Hulk.Finance: A Combination of DeFi and High Frequency Trading
DeFi continues to push the limits of blockchain technology. Whether its staking a native token for a second token from the same ecosystem, locking liquidity for an eternity to promote liquidity providing and the benefits of locking tokens, or simply creating new tokenomics that can be tested and studied, DeFi is exploring all avenues to produce the next breakout token such as YFI. Hulk.finance has stepped in to do just that.

https://preview.redd.it/j5qhdouxect51.png?width=675&format=png&auto=webp&s=f054e18e44a59d2328850373cbce91c648875670

Hulk.finance (Contract Address: 0xE1f8CD01aB04b51d02C6fb2BCA61B03fB5e33B99) is an ERC20 token which plans to utilize a DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization) format that will be community governed in order to promote high frequency trading in a manner only DeFi can bring to the table.

  • Farms Distribution: 80,000 (6% or 4,800 — Team Part)
  • Pre-sale: 10,000
  • Initial Liquidity Pool: 8,000
  • Development: 1,000
  • Marketing: 1,000

https://preview.redd.it/xiz7f0i2fct51.png?width=717&format=png&auto=webp&s=85a8e7ccc13661cb6318ed845793ab4f70c729e3

  • Staking Pool 1 Target: 10 million USDT.
  • Guaranteed APY: 15%.
  • Minimum Staking Amount: 100 USDT.
  • Type Of Staking: Locked
  • Minimum Staking Term: 24 hours
  • Withdraw Period: 24 hours after withdrawal order.
  • Reward Calculation: daily.

It will be interesting to see how successful and sustainable the project can be, but we will find out soon enough.

the year 2020 in Bitcoin Cash so far: a detailed history

the year 2020 in Bitcoin Cash so far: a detailed history
What follows at the bottom is a four page long chronological overview of what happened in BCH in 2020 so far. To make it more digestable and fun to read I start with my narrating of the story.
My attempt was to remain as objective as possible and "let the facts speak for themselve" with everything sourced. I also link to many read.cash articles, the decision of which are the important ones to include is certainly not easy, I count on the rest of the community if I overlooked anything important.

summary & my narrating of the story:
The year started out relatively calm, with cashfusion in "the news" and an older ongoing controversy between Amaury and Roger Ver being worked out. Starting Jan 22nd all debate broke loose with the announcement of “Infrastructure Funding Plan for Bitcoin Cash” by Jiang Zhuoer of BTC.TOP. To illustrate this point 2 days later coinspice ran the title " Roger Ver Praises Vigorous Debate, [...]" and 6 days, less than a week, later Chris Pacia made a read.cash post titled "The 253rd "Thoughts on developer funding" Article" which might have been only a slight exaggeration or he might have been counting. Part of the reason of the tsunami was the lack of worked out details. By the time of Pacia's post a lot had changed: Both BU, Bitcoin Verde and a group of miners had made announcements not to go along with "the plan".
On feb 1st, the second version of the IFP was announced by Jiang Zhuoer in a post “BCH miner donation plan update”. Two weeks later on Feb 15th, the third iteration was announced by Bitcoin ABC which was to be activated by hashrate voting and on the same day Flipstarter was introduced, a sign of the search for alternative solutions. After a few more days and a few more people coming out more against the IFP (including Jonald Fyookball, Mark Lundeberg & Josh Ellithorpe), BCHN was announced on feb 20th with a formal release a week later. Also feb 27th, the DAA was brought back into the conversation by Jonathan Toomim with his " The BCH difficulty adjustment algorithm is broken. Here's how to fix it." video. By early march the IFP was effectively dead with its author Jiang Zhuoer vowing to vote against it. This became clear to everyone when ABC, a day later sudddenly shifted gears towards non-protocol, donation based funding: the IFP was dead. End march ABCs 2020 Business Plan was announced as a way to raise $3.3 million. Mid april to mid may was the high time for voluntary funding with four node implementations and General Protocols, a BCH DeFi Startup successfully raising funds.
By May 15th, the 6th HF network upgrade things had pretty much cooled down. The upgraded included nothing controversial and even saw an unexpected doubling in the unconfirmed transaction chain. June 15th a month later things started to heat up again with the BCHN announcement to remove the "poison pill" or "automatic replay protection". 8th Jul Jonathan Toomim posted "BCH protocol upgrade proposal: Use ASERT as the new DAA" which promised the solution to the long dragging DAA problem. Jul 23th however an unexpected twist occurred when Amaury Séchet posted "Announcing the Grasberg DAA" an incompatible, alternative solution. This, again, sparked a ton of debate and discussion. Grasberg lasted just two weeks from Jul 23th to Aug 6th when ABC announced its plans for the november 2020 upgrade but it had successfully united the opposition in the meanwhile. ABCs plan for november included dropping grasberg in favour of aserti3–2d and introducing IFPv4. Now we're here August 8th, the IFP which was declared dead after just over a month (Jan 22-Mar 5) is now back in full force. The rest of the history is still being written but if p2p electronic cash is to succeed in any big regard it's very thinkable that these events will get into history books.

Cash App Not Returning a Rejected Bitcoin Deposit (2 Weeks and counting)

Hello,
On August 15th I attempted to make a deposit into my cash app wallet for approximately $75 worth of Bitcoin at the time. I sent 0.063 (roughly) worth of Bitcoin from an external Bitcoin wallet to my Cash App wallet.
I have been a Cash App user for several years and have made this very same type of deposit with Bitcoin into my Cash App wallet numerous times without issue. However, instead of the Bitcoin being placed in my wallet within thirty minutes, it instead remained as a 'Pending deposit' for roughly two days until I received an email informing me it had been rejected. I was not given a reason as to why it was rejected, but it provided instructions that prompted me to enter the address of an external wallet for the bitcoin from the rejected deposit to be sent too. I did so on August 17th when I received this email, yet now two weeks later (8/31) I still haven't received anything into the external wallet address I provided.

I have attempted to redo the reversal by entering the address of another external Bitcoin wallet for the bitcoin to be sent too, yet when I do so I get an error message that states "This deposit is already being reversed. Please check back later"; I have received this same message during my numerous attempts all to no avail.
I understand it can take time for the deposit to be 'reversed', especially if the reversal has to be done by a human agent, but there is no reason for a 2+ week wait. Also, while I believe the App has banned me and that is the reason for the, I have received no email or formal notification informing me I have been banned. While I am attempting to remain hopeful they will complete the deposit reversal, that hope is getting dimmer by the day.
While the Bitcoin itself is only worth a small amount of money, these were my funds and Cash App has no right to withhold them from me. If they don't want to accept my Bitcoin deposit (despite the fact they generated an address for me to send the bitcoin too) then that is their prerogative; but to simply 'reject' them while allowing them to perpetually linger in a wallet under the control of Cash App is no different than a person outright stealing them.
If there is some type of support agent on this forum I ask you to please private message me and return my funds. If this has happened to anyone else I am interested in how long it took for the 'Bitcoin Reversal' to be sent to your external wallet if at all.

Thank You.

Round up of Cryptocurrency News #4 Week 27/07 - 02/08

Good day all! Its been a month since we started and here is another weekly recap post. The market has been on an uptrend, on March 15th 2020 the total marketcap was $155B. Last Wednesday the total marketcap, on coinmarketcap.com, was $308B. Right now it is $338B, a total increase of $30B in 5 days and more than doubling in 1 1/2 months.

With the current increase we saw:

Throughout the week:
Speaking of making records, the United States of America record the highest amount of money printed ever. Within the month of June they have printed more money than the last 2 centuries since its founding. “The United States printed more money in June than in the first two centuries after its founding,” Morehead wrote. “Last month the U.S. budget deficit — $864 billion — was larger than the total debt incurred from 1776 through the end of 1979.”
Super short one today as some of the more interesting events that has happened was in the price action this week. Bitcoin holds way over above $9000 marking a potentially new trend! Exciting times to come! Cheers and see you next week.

Ghosted by Coinberry, Frozen Withdrawal

TLDR: Withdrew bitcoin successfully twice. Tried again on May 26th and it has been frozen in "processing" for over 2 weeks and Coinberry has not responded. Support has disappeared and updates have stopped. 387 users affected on May 30th, 123 remain affected on June 5th, my issue is unresolved on June 10th. Funding confirmations requested by and sent to Coinberry on June 4th. Still no response.
First of all, Coinberry claims that there has been substantial delays for various reasons. They claim that they are having issues on their side pertaining to account verifications and increased traffic. Status updates were being posted to Coinberry's official status page, but have stopped since June 5th, and customer support email, chat, and phone are all down. The fishiest part however is that, according to their website, only 123 users of the 327 initially affected remained on June 5th. It is hard to believe that they managed to get through ~50 users a day and still have not been able to resolve my issue or AT LEAST respond to my emails. Another fishy part is that Coinberry claims they cannot see my funding on "their ledger" but they keep a "Receipt No." for every transaction in the activity log, which (along with the e-transfer confirmation emails), I sent back to Coinberry on June 4th.
As many others have posted, I've had this withdrawal stuck as "processing" for over 2 weeks. My issue is not with the initial delay. However, the issue is that their customer support seems to have disappeared. I have been trying to reach support through email for two weeks now. The only response I received was about a week ago, requesting for proof of the e-transfer confirmations relating to the transactions on my account. I replied, with the confirmations, within minutes and have not heard back since. I have sent several follow-up emails trying to reach support as well as message them on facebook, but still, there is still no response. The least Coinberry should do is provide each affected user with an expected timeline for resolution. The CEO posted a blog "addressing" the speculation around Coinberry's insolvency. Honestly, this blog seems worthless as it is essentially saying is that they are "having issues but not insolvent" so he is chalking it up to service issues and claiming that "the team is working to resolve it asap". If this really was the case, it would be nice to receive a response from support to confirm that the resolution is on way. On that blog it states that "you may need to re-verify" or there will be delays if you "used a different bank account (#1 reason)", but my account IS verified and I emailed support confirming the transactions. Still no response, so I am assuming it is not being resolved.
I had chosen Coinberry because I found it to be very easy-to-use and trustworthy (considering they boast their "PIPEDA/FINTRAC" compliance) and the platform seemed to be one of the best I had used personally. Now, I am posting here in hopes that others take caution before depositing any funds into Coinberry, as well as in hopes that they may respond to me here as it seems to be the only place where people have been able to contact support. Again, they WILL NOT RESPOND to any queries that I have tried, so think twice before depositing any funds (during this time, at least).
I do not think Coinberry is necessarily a "scam" or a "Quadriga 2.0" as many others are claiming, and I think that they may legitamitely be working to resolve the issue. However, the fact that customers need to resort to research and reddit to find answers about situations like these, combined with the sketchy stories of past crypto exchanges, has made me rather disappointed with Coinberry at this time. Right now is definitely a shaky time in terms of how trustworthy Coinberry really is/whether it is setting up for a Quadriga-type scenario.
I will update the thread if I receive a response from Coinberry support. Feel free to post your own experiences.
*Update (10/06/2020) - DM'd u/CoinberryOfficial, awaiting further response.
*Update (11/06/2020) - Received initial DM response saying the same thing as the email I received a week ago, awaiting for further contact.
*Update (12/06/2020) - No further response via reddit or email. Coinberry status page updated on 11/06/2020 "Mobile app versions prior to 111.8 (on iOS) and 1.11.8 (on Android) were decommissioned on June 11, 2020". Updates about upgrading a mobile app but nothing about numerous counts of delayed withdrawals and locked accounts? Still no email or DM response.
*Update (12/06/2020) - Contacted back by u/CoinberryOfficial stating "Hi apologies for the delay, on our end the withdrawal is indicated as processed and completed, can you kindly verify on your end?" but I have not yet received my withdrawal. Working through the issue over DM.
*Update (13/06/2020) - Working slowly with u/CoinberryOfficial but for now, I have been given the exact same answer as I was in the only email I have received from support in the 3 weeks since I tried to withdraw my mere 0.01989 BTC. The response I received was "No your withdrawal is currently still processed and will be sent out once we can locate the deposit that was credited to your account on may 15th. We are unable to locate the deposit made on may 15th , but can locate the second one made on may 26th. We do not require further verification but do require to verify on your end that it was not accidently blocked by your bank. For the security of your information we do kindly ask that you continue this correspondence with support via email." Now, I have to wait till monday because it is after office hours (like that means anything, been trying to reach them all week lol). This is frustrating because I have already sent proof and confirmations over a week ago of interac e-transfers, bank statements, and Coinberry activity, but the support team never replied. It makes no sense as to how it "cannot be located" because I had successfully withdrew all the BTC purchased from the funds on the 15th and simply hadn't funded it again until the 26th. Next update on 15/06/2020 -.-
*UPDATE (15/06/2020) - Still NO RESPONSE from support or u/CoinberryOfficial. Don’t know when I’m going to get my funds at this point, as on Reddit I was told this would be “resolved first thing Monday morning”. So disappointed.
*UPDATE (16/06/2020) - u/CoinberryOfficial responded this morning stating "Sorry for the delay, support will make contact with you shortly". 5 hours later, still no response. I am assuming "business hours" are also over for the day now too. Update posted by the CEO, full of bullshit from what I can tell, referring to these issues and stating "all hands on deck", "we doubled customer success staff" and worst of all "This meant getting customers’ funds to them promptly...our customer success team can monitor, in real time, what our customers may need and where an issue could arise, as well as being alerted to any potential customer service delays...has allowed our customer success team to ensure a seamless, consistent customer experience". Ridiculous.
UPDATE: As of today (25/06/2020), I have received my funds and the issue has finally been RESOLVED. Thanks to Barry from Coinberry support. Reached out on the websites live chat and seem to have gotten extremely lucky that Barry was there and remained online, chatting to me, until the issue was completely resolved. Although the delays throughout this whole month were a major issue, it is a relief that Coinberry does in fact seem to be resolving these issues.
